Chinese people call Chap Goh Mei as Chinese Valentine’s day too!
Chap Goh Mei is a Chinese’s festival where they celebrate it on the last night of Chinese New Year. In 2023, it will happen on the 5th of February. Chinese people call this as Chinese Valentine’s day too!
On the night of Chap Goh Mei, people would normally go to the temple for praying and blessing. One of the highlights of Chap Goh Mei is the matchmaking throwing orange activity. Single womens will write down their contact number on an orange and throw it into the river of the temple. After that, single mens will collect and scoop it.
The belief of this tradition is because in the ancient days, these activities would allow single women to marry good husbands. Although for today’s generation, social media apps have already become one of the matchmaking tools, for example tinder, but some people still believe in the tradition and will also write down their social media contact on the orange for the matchmaking throwing session.
Besides the matchmaking throwing orange activity, there are other activities going on too during Chap Goh Mei like lion dance, eating tang yuan, etc.
