Netflix’s Marie Kondo appeared on the Red Carpet at the Oscars early Monday morning and the only thing that rings in our head is “spark joy”.
If you don’t know what that means and why it kept popping in our heads, “spark joy” is Marrie Kondo’s mantra when it comes to up-keeping your living space.
And that got us thinking, what actually sparks joy among us Malaysians?
It’s not very hard, really. We don’t really have to dig deep because we Malaysians are easily contented, so here it is:
1. Pride for our national FOOD
If you’re like us and can’t live without our Nasi Lemak, cendol, rojak and many more, then you can probably relate to this.
Although many other countries claim some of these foods as “their own”, deep down, we know where it’s actually from. (no shade, no tea).
2. Free stuff
Let’s admit it, this is the four letter word that makes us go cray cray!
How many of us demand for free gifts after buying an item? A free case for your new smartphone? Free tint for your brand-new car? Or free coupons after a meal? Free luggage AND umbrella for credit card sign ups?
Be it free food, free coupons or free gifts, we’ve all been there, and we aren’t afraid to admit that free stuff sparks so much joy within us!
3. Public Holidays
National team won a world championship? Public holiday. New government? Public holiday. New Yang-di-Pertuan Agong? We will push our luck by speculating news about public holiday. Birthday? Self-declared public holiday it is!
4. Festivals
From Chinese New Year, Deepavali, Hari Raya and Christmas, us Malaysians love our festivals or should we say, festival SALES!
Festivals are fun and all, but no matter who you are and what you’re celebrating, we can all agree that the festival sales are taken advantage off by anyone and everyone!
5. Jam-free roads
You know what we’re talking about, when majority of the city folks “balik kampung” and the city feels like a ghost town?
Yeah, you can probably agree with me that, it’s the best time to drive because no one can disturb you, honk at your car or give you that “you think this one your father’s road ah?” stare.
Despite all the craziness that’s happening in Malaysia, we can all relate to at least one of the above. And that’s okay because as Marie Kondo word it, “IT SPARKS JOY!”
