It’s Hungry Ghost Festival this month, let us tell you some haunted locations that you may not know!
1. Kellie’s Castle in Perak
This castle has an eerie reputation with the discovery of four hidden tunnels under the house where over 70 construction workers died from the Spanish Flu while working on them. As tourists have often gotten themselves lost in the tunnels while exploring, these tunnels are officially off-limits for all visitors today but that didn’t stop many from getting that eerie and spooky feeling when visiting this uncompleted mansion.
2. Karak Highway
Karak Highway that stretches for 60 kilometers is long, dark, windy, and is prone to accidents which often results in death. The largest crash that happened here took place in 1990, known as the 1990 Highway Crash, where a bus carrying passengers collided with a lorry, an FRU truck, two taxis, and six cars, leaving 17 people dead.
There are different sightings about people having seen a young schoolboy wandering the roadside of the dark Karak highway, looking lost and desolated. Do not ever stop if you come across a boy like this as he is looking for his dead mom. The sighting of any yellow Volkswagen (VW) Beetle will first block your lane and move slowly, making you overtake it. Once you’ve done that and continue driving along, there are chances of you seeing the yellow VW again, again driving as slow as possible. According to many motorists that passed through the Karak Highway, they have seen a pontianak flying on the highway. These motorists claimed that this pontianak comes in the form of a beautiful young woman in white that is able to make heads turn. She is usually at the side of the road asking for a lift.
3. First World Hotel, Genting Highlands, Pahang
Apart from reports of sounds of knocking on doors, ghosts have been ‘seen’ lingering around corridors, hovering outside windows and disappearing in mid-air upon jumping off cliffs. The most chilling rumor is the supposed haunting of the entire 21st floor, leading to its forced unoccupancy. Even when the property is fully booked, the hotel still seems to avoid renting the rooms on this level as the elevator also skips the 21st floor.
4. Bukit Tunku, Kuala Lumpur
Formerly known as Kenny Hills, Bukit Tunku is often referred to as the Beverly Hills of Malaysia. In this particular area surrounded by dense trees, a mother living with her family supposedly hung herself in the first-floor bedroom. According to a ghost hunter and his crew, they heard a female voice humming away from the room she was last seen alive in, and felt stones hit their heads, thrown from the second floor. A female crew member even experienced a strangulation sensation until she turned blue-black, causing a healing ritual to be performed on her. Some have seen a ghost rider joyriding around on a motorcycle in the dark only to see it vanish around the bend.
5. Mona Fandey’s House, Shah Alam
Mona Fandey, a singer-turned-bomoh who gruesomely killed politician Mazlan Idris during a magical ritual in 1993. Apparently, she had him convinced that she would be able to grant him power and wealth but ended up killing him and chopping him into 18 pieces which she buried in her own yard. In 2001, moments before her execution, she exclaimed that she would never die. We often wonder if this is why her house, which is still untouched today.
