From free movie tickets by a local cinema and now, a new face mask promoting self-love by one of the renown Malaysian influencer, can International Women’s Day 2019 get any better than this?
We scored an exclusive interview with the esteemed blogger turned iconic fashionista, Jane Lau aka Jane Chuck who launches her very own facial mask this International Women’s Day- the very first product under her own company Chuck’s. This one-of-a-kind face mask is also something that Jane has been working under wraps for the past 1 year. 12 months in the making, Jane poured her heart into it so that it’s up to perfection. On a sunny Tuesday morning, Jane sat down with us from Sevenpie as she answered some really personal questions. Jane also graced us with some amazing masks that left us all feeling empowered, one sheet at a time. We hope you enjoy this piece as much as we did putting this together for your viewing pleasure!
1. Hi Jane! Having experienced many amazing skincare brands, there must be a reason why you’ve chosen to make a skincare mask yourself. Can you tell us why?
Hi Sevenpie! I am a big fan of Korean beauty products and K-beauty so whenever I visit Korea, I will usually buy a lot of their products in bulk. Plus, I get a lot of people asking me what skincare products I use, or even my skincare routine. And that actually inspired me to create my own mask because skincare routines can vary from one individual to another as different skin types require different products.
Whereas, a facial mask comes in a sheet that contains all the necessary ingredients that will give your skin the love and nourishment that it needs.
2. We are aware that your much-anticipated ‘Self Love Honey Mask’ is dropping this International Women’s Day (8th March), is there a reason why you’ve specifically chosen this very day?
When I came up with the idea of the ‘Self Love Honey Mask’, I really wanted ’empowerment’ to be the core message behind this product. I personally feel that having a healthy skin can empower someone, women especially, and make them feel more comfortable and confident with themselves, and that’s something I feel really passionate about. So this is the value that I would like to pass on through this ‘Self Love Honey Mask’, and dropping it on International Women’s Day seems like the right thing to do.
3. Why have you chosen to name it the ‘Self Love Honey Mask’? Is mental health something that you feel truly passionate about?
Yes, when I started planning for Chuck’s, I knew I wanted it to be something personal. I get a lot of DMs from my followers and they tell me about their experiences like relationship problems and betrayal and whatnot. And I feel a sense of honor that these people chose to confide their hardships in me, so this is definitely for them. It’s called the ‘Self Love Honey Mask’ because honey is a natural ingredient that is widely used to heal wounds and it has anti-bacterial properties, and much like self-love, time and attention to better yourself will heal all wounds. We also use Royal Jelly, which amps up the healing process on scars and scabs, so it’s dedicated to giving you a healthier skin than not only feels good but nourishes you as well.
4. What is your secret to self-love and maintaining it in an age of society where everything and everyone is being scrutinized and standards are set unrealistically?
I would say to stop judging yourself, so people can stop judging you. Most of the time, when people making a certain judgment about you, they’re normally people who don’t know you on a personal level, or people that you don’t know at all!
The closest people to you are the ones that matter. How I stay grounded all these years is through a great bunch of people that I surround myself with. And I can trust them to give me any feedback, because I know it isn’t out of spite or hate, but from love. Your recognition online is no determinant to how you should act and treat people. We all had the same start of ‘0’ at the beginning and we built it up, so it makes nobody better than anyone else.
I also believe that it is good practice to always be your authentic self, and taking all those unnecessary comments with a grain of salt will lead you to live a happier life.
5. Can we expect more variants of face masks from Chuck’s?
For now, my team and I are focusing our efforts on the ‘Self Love Honey Mask’, but there will be more variants to come, for sure! I don’t plan to make Chuck’s as a brand for skincare only; it’s more of a hub for me to express and introduce products that I feel really passionate about. At the end of the day, I want Chuck’s to be an extension of me to my followers, so they get to experience the things that I am experiencing as well. So be sure to expect more than just skincare products from Chuck’s!
6. What empowers you as a woman?
Knowing what you don’t want. Often people think that finding what you want is the key to being confident in where you’re headed in life like relationships, career, finance, etc. But personally, I feel that by knowing what you don’t want, your foundation of confidence in what you do want, will be heightened by tenfold. But for you to learn what you do not want in life, you must first and foremost say yes to experiences and opportunities. Then though your experiences, you learn to filter out what you don’t want in life.
7. Since today is International Women’s Day, what is a message you would like to share to girls out there who are struggling with self-worth?
Don’t be so quick to put yourself down, the journey to loving yourself requires a lot of self-forgiveness, and it’ll drain you if you continue to over-criticize your tiny mistakes.
Find out what you don’t want, be open to new experiences and try anything that can give you the power of knowledge and insight to knowing yourself better.
