Of all the things not to be done in Japan we are all familiar with, like not tipping or driving on the right side, pouring soy sauce directly on your rice, ignoring the queueing system, talking loudly on public transport, is not how to not dress like when in Japan! Here’s an interesting story!
So, Mandopop king Jay Chou was having a relaxing trip with his family in Japan and was lured by a long queue towards a cafe! According to the star, he was dressed in ‘Aniki style’ or ‘older brother’ style. Really, it is just a dark printed shirt, sunglasses and a beanie, which is quite a familiar Jay Chou look.

We have no details if the line magically got shorter very quickly, but what we know is that he was left all alone in the cafe shortly after the cafe owner seated him by the corner.
“The café owner eventually gave me a seat in the corner. But when I sat down, all the customers around me got up and left immediately. It looked like we had booked out the entire café.” He wrote.
It turns out the Japanese were scared off as they mistake him as the boss of the Japanese gangsters, Yakuza as that is how the gangsters normally dress there. The owner even offered to pay his bill and left him with a golden piece of advice not to dress like this in the future.
The next day, he posted a photo of his family, with the caption that translates:
“What a waste not being dressed in the same ‘Aniki style’ today. It would have totally matched this place, and we wouldn’t have to pay for our meal too.”
We can’t decide what’s the better story: That the Japanese did not approve of his fashion sense, or that they did not recognize what a big star he is! Leave a comment!
