Let’s talk about Covid-19.
Let’s be honest, the topic of Covid-19 is inescapable nowadays. It’s all everyone could talk about since the effects of it has devastated the world. But, how much of what you know of the virus is true?
With all the news swirling around this virus, we can bet that some of the things you have been hearing are false. Maybe your aunt didn’t fact check that chain Whatsapp message she sent out, again. Regardless, we are here to bust some of these myths for you!
1.Can eating garlic help prevent infection with the new coronavirus?
We are not dealing with vampires here.
We’ll admit: garlic is a good, healthy food that can bring health benefits, and should be incorporated in your diet regularly. But, there is no hard evidence that suggests that it provides protection against the coronavirus. Sorry, guys, but munching on garlic isn’t going to help us in this.
2.Can taking antibiotics protect against Covid-19?
Nope. This is a myth.
Antibiotics only work against bacteria, while Covid-19 is classified as a virus. So far, there are no specific medications recommended to prevent or treat Covid-19.
3.Can spraying alcohol or chlorine all over your body kill the new coronavirus?
Now, this one is a little confusing. Isn’t hand sanitizers alcohol, and doesn’t it help with killing the virus?
Well, no. Chlorine and alcohol will not kill viruses that have already entered your body. In fact, spraying alcohol or chlorine all over your body can damage mucous membranes in areas such as the eyes and mouth.
4.Does taking a hot bath prevent Covid-19?
No, hot showers do help prevent the virus. Our normal body temperature would still remain around 36.5°C to 37°C, regardless of the temperature of your bath or shower.
5.Can the new coronavirus be transmitted through mosquito bites?
No, there is no evidence to suggest that it can be transmitted by mosquitoes.The virus is spread through droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
6.Can the Covid-19 virus only be transmitted in areas with certain weathers and temperatures?
The SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes Covid-19 can be transmitted in all areas around the world. This includes areas with hot and humid weather – and no, cold weather and snow cannot kill this new coronavirus.
Only a few things are for certain. WHO maintains that the most effective way to protect yourself against Covid-19 is by frequently washing your hands to kill viruses and avoiding touching your eyes, mouth and nose.
