First impressions are important, especially to those who may be your potential future wife/husband.
There is nothing wrong with being prepared for a first date. You plan out the perfect outfit, itinerary, and the perfect restaurant.
But, first dates are already awkward so try not to make it worse by ordering some of your local favorites!
Here are some of Malaysian food/dishes you should avoid ordering on your first date.
1. Petai, sambal belacan, and durian
You might want to think twice before ordering these dishes on your first date. As the strong odour from these dishes are very pervasive. It tends to linger onto your mouth and body. All it takes is just one burp in front of your date and it’ll scare them away immediately. You won’t be scoring that 2nd date ever.
2. Buffets
Well, we Malaysians do love ourselves a good buffet! Especially when we challenge ourselves to go for the 3rd round at the buffet table after 2 full meals, just to make the buffet worthy. Admit it, we all are a little “kiasu” deep down inside. But meanwhile you’re having you’re little “Man vs Food” challenge, your date might be wondering if you have been starving yourself on a deserted island for far too long.
3. Seafood
Seafood makes the date more awkward, especially crabs! The pauses you need to take in between to crack or chew your crab will only add to the awkward pauses in your conversation. Chilli crab sauce are the ones you might want to avoid since that dish is known for its sauce splashing and making a mark on your clothes, or even worst, your date’s.
4. Banana leaf rice
Our very own favourite local delight, but for on your first date, it might not be your favourite food to order as it won’t play out in your favour, trust us. It is very difficult to look at someone romantically as you’re trying to eat with your fingers, not to mention licking the curry sauce that is dripping from your fingers.
There you have it! Make sure you’re aware the next time you go on a date to not order these local delights, as you won’t want to screw up your first impression. Good luck!
