It’s time for the younger generation to step up!
Ask any Malaysians and they’ll know that 9th May 2018 marks a history-making day for Malaysia – the 14th General Elections.
Following the news last year about the Cabinet’s efforts to lower down the voting age from 21 years old to 18 years old, Election Chairman Azhar Azizan Harun announced on June 25th that the motion of lowering down the voting age will be tabled on July 4th.
This is definitely great news to all youths in Malaysia!

However, it would still need a two-thirds majority in Parliament before any amendments on Malaysian law could be made. Youth and Sports Minister, Syed Saddiq, also mentioned in an article that by lowering down the voting age, it could add an additional of 3.7 million voters!
The youths of Malaysia can finally rise up and have more involvement in the Malaysian politics scene! We can also look forward to a youth caucus to be formed in Parliament as proposed by the Youth and Sports Minister that will be a platform to get input from youth MPs of every party.
By lowering down the voting age to 18, Malaysia will be 1 of 9 other countries namely the United States, Britain, Australia, India, Iran, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Cambodia who’s eligible voting age is at 18.
With that said, there’s no excuse now for the younger next generation to step up and make the change they want to see in our beloved nation.
Here’s to hoping that the Parliament would approve the motion for a better change in Malaysia!
