Yes, you read that right! Barney, our favorite purple dinosaur is heading back to the big screens.
The Get Out and Black Panther star, Daniel Kaluuya and his production company, 59% is partnering with Mattel Films to co-produce a live-action movie based on the iconic purple dinosaur, Barney & Friends.
Kaluuya stated that the film will reveal a never before seen side of Barney. Specific plots are yet to be revealed but Mattel Films, Robbie Brenner said that the film will take some unexpected turns.
“Working with Daniel will enable us to take a completely new approach to Barney that will surprise audiences. The project will speak to the nostalgia of the brand in a way that will resonate with adults while entertaining today’s kids,” said Robbie.
In an interview, Daniel Kaluuya shared about his own relationship with Barney, stating: “Barney was a ubiquitous figure in many of our childhoods, then he disappeared into the shadows, left misunderstood”.
Barney & Friends was initially produced back in 1992 to 2009. The film was a childhood staple to many as Barney, a purple humanoid Tyrannosaurus Rex conveys educational messages through songs and small dance routines with friendly, optimistic attitudes.
Kaluuya stated that the team is excited to work on this project as they want to explore this compelling modern-day hero and see if the message of “I love you, you love me” can stand the test of time.
