Although Malaysia has won the Thomas Cup five times, we can’t be too relaxed as the most recent win was in 1992. Let’s cross our fingers for Lee Zii Jia to bring back glory to our homeland once again!
As badminton is the most popular sport in Malaysia, our star player, Lee Zii Jia is currently at Impact Arena in Bangkok competing for Thomas Cup 2022! In his recent victory in the Badminton Asia Championships (BAC) 2022 in Manila, Philippines on 1 May 2022 (Sunday), he is ready to make us proud.
On 9 May, Lee Zii Jia gave Malaysia a great start in their opening match against England. The first set was easy to him as he took away the set easily by 21-10 but in the second set, Toby Penty picked up five straight points to close the gap with Malaysia. However, Zii Jia kept his cool and snatched the set 21-15 and won a point for Malaysia.
“As much as I hope that we could win the Thomas Cup this year, most importantly I need to make sure that I deliver my best for my country,” Zii Jia told the press after the game.
Even though we still have a long way to go up to the finals on 14 May but baby steps matter.
