Catching up on our favourite TV shows were our ways of surviving through the 90s. The year before social media take the reigns of our leisure time, everyone loves to while away in front of the television – sometimes, with our dinner plates in hand. Providing a nostalgic glimpse of our long-lost youths, here are our favourite TV shows that made an impact on the telly.
1. Friends
What happens when you live in the same apartment with your group of friends? Hilarious conversations, dramatic twists, and budding romance ensue. ‘Friends’ is pretty much a summary of it and the sitcom puts famous characters like Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Joey, Chandler and Ross front and centre. Together, they make a dynamic cast whose chemistry is memorable to this very day. To watch shows like this with a click of a button, this is where apps such as screen mirroring come in.
2. Sex and the City
It’s tough to compare Sex and the City with other romantic-comedy series of its kind. From the vibrant New York nightlife to the bustling cityscapes, this TV series eventually became a pop culture icon of its generation. Every episode of this long-running series is themed after various courses of the character’s life. Plus, everyone loves to see Carrie Bradshaw, Samantha Jones, Charlotte York, and Miranda Hobbes navigating the streets of New York with the finest 90s style trends.
3. Ally McBeal
Consider prime time television incomplete without watching episodes of Ally McBeal. One of the most memorable comedy-drama to date, the series tells the journey of an eccentric lawyer, also the title character, who hustles in a Boston law firm alongside her equally eccentric colleagues. Apart from Ally’s conversations and dance off with an imaginary baby, the show also puts great actors such as Robert Downey Jr., Jane Krakowski, Lucy Liu and Portia de Rossi in the spotlight.
4. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is pretty much the epitome of 90s pop culture and it’s true. Highlighting neon outfits, loud prints, and youth slangs, the series also catapulted actor Will Smith to fame. It follows an easy-going teenager who finds himself moving in with his wealthy relative’s home in Bel-Air. Funny moments and hilarious scenes ensue, especially when the character finds himself in an opulent lifestyle that is completely different from his care-free lifestyle.
5. The X-Files
The best thing about a mystery is the ability to keep us glued to our seats. When X-Files aired its first episode on the television, it did just that. We loved seeing FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully combined their wits and intelligence to solve the most bizarre paranormal phenomena. What makes the episodes even more interesting is the contrast between Mulder’s beliefs and Scully’s skepticism in the world of paranormal.
