The story is about a young woman who receives a proposal to become a ‘ghost bride’ to the son of a wealthy family.
Set in 19th century Malacca, the series starts off with a girl named Li Lan who is pressured to marry the only son of Lim’s family in order to save her family from falling into debt. And here’s the thing – the son of the wealthy family is deceased.
One of the traditional Chinese practices that involves a marriage in which one or both parties are dead is called a ghost wedding. Ghost weddings are carried out due to a belief that those who died unmarried will not be alone in their afterlife.
The project of the series took about 2 years to complete, and it is filmed across Malaysia but mainly in Penang, Ipoh and Taiping. Two Malaysian directors were the heroes behind the series as they had to bring a book with 300+ pages to life! As this is Netflix’s first large-scale collaboration with Malaysia, it features local and international talents too.
