Wham bam, thank you maa’m. Or in this case, the official WHO website..
The recent viral outbreak has had many on edge. With anxiety at the forefront of the global crises, many assumptions have taken society hostage. Today, we break those chains with cold, hard evidence.
Here are the top 5 myths about the coronavirus.
1.COVID-19 can be transmitted in areas with hot and humid climates.
Based on the amalgam of evidence so far, the COVID-19 virus can be transmitted in any and ALL areas. It does not discriminate. Therefore, do not take anything for granted – protect yourself and your loved ones.
2.Cold weather and snow kill the virus
FALSE! The most effective way to reduce your chances of contracting the illness is through frequent hand washing and religious hygiene.
3.Thermal detectors are 100% foolproof
Thermal scanners are effective in singling out people who’ve developed a fever due to infection. However, they are unable to detect those who are already infected but are yet to show signs of increased body temperature. It generally takes between 2 to 10 days before those who are infected show signs of a fever.
4.Young people just chillax lah!
Although it does seem that older people or those with pre-existing comorbidities seem to be more vulnerable to falling severely ill with the virus, those who are younger/healthier still need to be wary. So step up for the vulnerable. We have a social responsibility to those left defenseless. WHO advises people of all ages to take steps to protect themselves from the outbreak.
5.Is there a cure?
As of now, there is no specific treatment available to prevent or treat the novel coronavirus. Clinical trials and development efforts have been accelerated in the hopes of recovering a treatment solution.
