This marks Malaysia’s fourth Starbucks Signing Store in the world!
In promoting diversity and employment opportunities for members of the deaf community, Starbucks actually opened its very first sign-language outlet at Bangsar Village II 3 years ago. Well, I bet many of our local friends do not even know about this!
Just exactly one day ago, Starbucks just launched its second Signing Store in Penang, which is one of the popular foodie spots in Malaysia! The well-known coffeeshop chain announced its grand opening of the sign-language store on its official Facebook page.
In the aim of achieving success and diversity in the workplace, Starbucks teamed up with the Penang Deaf Association to support the professional working experience and development of the coffeeshop’s staffs.
The president of the Penang Deaf Association, Razman Tan Abdullah, mentioned that the partnership will ‘provide richer career opportunities and sense of belonging to the local deaf community’.
What’s more? they will also be providing internship opportunities and sign-language classes for the outlet’s seven hearing employees. Besides, the place would also be used by the Penang Deaf Community to host a variety of events, including sign language workshops, deaf culture community events, and even career development seminars.
Similar to the Bangsar outlet, this Penang outlet features visual alarms, digital trays, and even point-of-sale systems with an attached customer display, wow!
Customers who are not familiar with sign language can also place their order by writing on a tablet. They can then double-check their order if it was entered correctly into the restaurant pos systems. An assigned number will then appear on the screen above the counter when the order is confirmed or ready.
Standing tall at three-storeys, the Signing Store in Burmah Road, Penang marks its second sign-store in Malaysia, and ranked fourth in the world after the first in Bangsar Village II, Kuala Lumpur; Washington DC, United States; and Guangzhou, China.
Well done Starbucks! Calling out all Penangites, head over to Penang’s Sign-Language outlet right now to enjoy a yummy coffee experience with a twist!
