Cold Pursuit is dropping in Malaysian cinemas today and if you’re looking to watch another one of Liam Neeson’s films to get you in the mood, this is for you!
Sevenpie was privileged to be at the premiere-screening of Cold Pursuit at TGV Cinemas. And we were extremely surprised by Neeson’s new film! But before we get into that, let’s take a look back at a few of Liam Neeson’s work that held us in constant suspense with his familiar plots and thrilling scenes.
1. Unknown
A 2011 film that was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and stars Liam Neeson alongside Diane Kruger and January Jones.
Following a serious car accident, a doctor in Berlin awakes to find his world turned 360 degrees as his wife doesn’t even recognise him and another man is using his identity while mysterious assassins are haunting him. (FYI, that’s not even the plot of the film).
We don’t want to spoil it too much for you, but we’ll leave the trailer down below.
2. The Commuter
This should be fresh off your movie bucket list because the film was released just last year (2018).
A daily routine commuting home by an insurance salesman becomes a thrilling adventure when he was forced to uncover the identity of a hidden passenger on the train. The catch is he must do it before the last stop! This one definitely pushes you to the edge of you seat!
3. Non-Stop
This movie is about an alcoholic air marshal who sees his job as nothing but a mundane task that pays the bills. However, that all changes when his day-to-day job soon turns into a high-crisis, goose-chase and a flight he’ll never forget.
4. Taken trilogy
This is probably one of his most renowned work. ‘Taken’ is about a father who is searching high and low for his child. Something which many parents can relate to, but it isn’t just losing your child in a mall, it becomes a high-adrenaline chase to uncover who and why his daughter was kidnapped. If you haven’t seen it, you should certainly stream it ASAP.
5. The Grey
A much-needed vacation following a five-week shift at an Alaskan oil refinery quickly went wrong when a storm hits, causing the plane to crash into the wilderness. Only eight men survive the gruesome journey to survival.
And on #6 is the film that you most probably came here for, a film that we feel sets his past films apart from. And is his most refreshing role yet!
6. Cold Pursuit
This may seem like another one of Liam Neeson’s action and thriller films, it can be agreeable that the film does dive-deep into family values and gory violence which is pretty similar to the majority of his other films, but Cold Pursuit shows a different side to Neeson. He played a rather calm, grieving and surprisingly humorous character that just wants closure.
The question is, did audiences receive the portrayed message that Hans Moland and Frank Baldwin was trying to portray?
The film isn’t too hard to understand- a father trying to seek revenge for his son’s death doesn’t take a genius to digest, but what I find pretty interesting is that writer, Hans Molan took an interesting cinematic approach on the film. It has Wes Anderson vibes written all over it. The touch of bouncy nonchalance the movie gives when portraying deaths tickles all the right funny-bones. Although not to compare, the directors definitely have their own personal touch on their own individual films. But it’s safe to say that The Grand Budapest Hotel and Cold Pursuit does have rather interesting similarities.
The overall film was unexpected, the violence may come as a usual “Liam Neeson” film, but the comedic approach was a great touch to derive Neeson from his other films we see him in.
If you’re looking to watch another one of Liam Neeson’s “Taken” films, Cold Pursuit might come as a little of a shock but if Action, Thriller, Adventure, and dark humour is what you’re looking for, this film will definitely shine a new light on the diversification that Liam Neeson is capable of.
