Are durians as big of a threat to national security as they are smelly?
If you’re Malaysian, you’d be no stranger to the tales of the Smelly Durian. As much as we love the fruit, we can’t deny its pungent odour. Its smell itself casts a distinct divide between locals – those who hate the smell, those who don’t mind it, and those who can’t get enough of it.
Throughout the course of time, we’ve noticed that foreigners aren’t as receptive to our unique fruit as we are and have been. However, the usual response seems to be a mere crinkling up of the nose in disgust, not a panicked evacuation.
A dozen German postal workers were rushed to the hospital when a peculiar smelling package surfaced. Many others were rushed out of the building as suspicions arose upon the arrival of a very smelly box.
Policemen, firefighters as well as emergency services were deployed immediately to the site, a small post office in the Bavarian town of Schweinfurt.
“Due to the unknown content, it was initially unclear whether the suspect package posed a greater risk,” a statement from Schweinfurt police department stated.
When opened by authorities, the package turned out to hold 4 Thai durians which a middle-aged resident of the town had sent to a friend in Nuremberg.
