Disney and Pixar have done it again. Its latest box office success, COCO, follows a musically talented, 12-year-old boy by the name of Miguel Rivera (voiced by Anthony Gonzalez), the youngest of a family of shoemakers who despises music.
Despite his family stern forbiddance towards music for members in the family for generations, young Miguel aspires to be a musician and play the guitar in secret in order to follow the footsteps of his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz (voiced by Anthony Gonzalez). On Día de los Muertos (the day when the dead come to visit), Miguel breaks into Cruz’s mausoleum to steal the singer’s guitar to play at a music competition.
But as he strums the guitar, he is transported to the Land of the Dead. Miguel embarks on a journey to return to the living world, with the help of a skeleton trickster Hector (voiced by Gael García Bernal), and he discovers the secrets about his family that have been buried for generations.
Let’s talk about what make this movie so brilliant and beautiful, shall we?
1. The pop of colors
Pixar has never disappoint us with its stunning visuals, and Coco was no exception. The surroundings, the characters, the mystical creatures of the Land of the Dead; everything is so beautifully detailed, giving the audience a spectacular experience.
2. Catchy theme song
Disney’s songs hold a special place in all our hearts. Their catchy, can’t-help-but-sing-along songs are what makes a Disney movie, a Disney movie. Because it’s executed so seamlessly, it’s not too much of an irony for Coco to be a musical of sorts when the storyline revolves around a strong knitted family who bans music with a passion. Frozen writers, Kristen Anderson-Lopez & Robert Lopez return with the films signature song, “Remember Me,” which is sung several times during the film, changing the context of the lyrics each time it was performed by a different character.
3. It’s clturally sensitive which touches the atlas of emotions
Come on, it’s a Disney Pixar movie afterall; if it doesn’t make you laugh, cry, or bewitch, we don’t know what else will.
I promised not to spoil it for you, but I can let you know that you probably tear… a lot. Blame it on the onions! The bottomline is:
GET READY TO FEEL!
P/S: Your favorite characters from Frozen will make a short appearances before Coco starts so be sure to watch out for them.
