If you are a fan of body art, you must know Julian Oh for his incredible work on tattoos. A real artist at heart, we managed to speak to him while getting to know him better personally and also his plans for his tattoo studio, Wayang Kulit Tatu.
Hi Julian! Share more about yourself to our readers
Hey guys, I’m Julian and I’ve been tattooing for around 8 years. I’m also one of the guys who run Wayang Kulit Tatu.
Share with us what inspire you to venture into the art of tattoo?
I think before you become a tattooer, you need to have a strong passion and love of the art and most importantly the craft of tattooing. I’ve been getting tattooed for awhile before I got into it. I guess it was just a natural progression for me after having hung out at a tattoo shop day in day out.
Looking into your social media, notice that your tattoo artwork mostly are animals; Can you describe to us your style of tattoo art?
Yes, it does seem so that most of what I do tend to be animals, they are without a doubt really fun to do. I would describe my work as a sketchy illustrative style.
Share with us what is the trend of tattoo art right now
I honestly couldn’t really pin point whats really really trendy now. Styles are also a lot more sophisticated now.
Do you have any tattoo artist that you look up to?
As with most tattooers, I definitely do have tattooers whose work I admire.
Apart from tattoo art, you are into photography as well; do share with us more about this hobby of yours too
I used to do still photography, but right now I am more of a cinematographer for television commercials.
We know that you have a shop called Wayang Kulit Tatu. What makes you started this shop?
I used to tattoo privately, and also travel abroad for work alot with my friend and tattooer Taco Joe and we have been talking alot about opening a shop together in KL once the time is right. We both share the same passion for the tattooing industry especially in Malaysia and I guess one of the many goals of most tattooers is to one day be able to run a good shop, and that is what we are trying to do now.
The name of the shop sounds very Malaysian, is there any meaning behind it?
Wayang Kulit Tatu came about mainly as a name to represent ourselves as Malaysian tattooers in the international scene whenever we traveled abroad for conventions and stuff. We wanted a name that would carry our identity as Malaysians, as well as something that would sound interesting so people could identify and remember it.
Do introduce us the tattoo artists that are in Wayang Kulit Tatu
Well, theres me, Taco Joe my partner, Rynny Elf and Reef Bryah.
There are so many tattoo studios out there, what do you think makes Wayang Kulit Tatu special/different?
I guess this is more of a question for our clients to answer 🙂
Can briefly explain to us the process of getting a tattoo on your body? I think some readers out there would love to know
Its pretty simple actually. Assuming you already have an idea of the tattoo you would like to get, come in for a consult so that we can discuss the design, size, price, etc…and from there we will lock down a date for the appointment.
Any upcoming guest artist for the tattoo lovers to expect?
We always have plans on guest tattooers who would come to the shop and updates will be posted on our social media platforms once details are confirmed.
Any personal life motto or the motto for Wayang Kulit Tatu?
Make good, clean and strong tattoos, and always be nice to your clients.
