After losing a defamation suit against Star Planet for cancelling a past concert, Namewee, also known as Wee Meng Chee, was pressured into issuing an apology video. But rather than conforming, Namewee, true to his character, had a different agenda.
In September of last year (2023), Namewee found himself in court due to a YouTube video criticizing concert organizer Star Planet and its managing director, Datuk Alan Foo, following the cancellation of his 4896 Final Call World Tour at the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur back in 2019. Recently, it was disclosed that Star Planet emerged victorious in the defamation suit, requiring Namewee to compensate them and issue a public apology.
In a classic display of his irreverent style, Namewee recently posted a comically exaggerated apology video on his Facebook page, featuring what appeared to be fake tears. In the video, he solemnly declared his unequivocal and unreserved apology to the plaintiffs, Datuk Foo Ming Lam and Star Planet Sdn Bhd, for his past videos published in December 2019, admitting that the statements made were wrong and should never have been published.
Pausing to fake sniffle and cry, he retracted all statements made against them, promising not to repeat similar statements in the future, and concluded with a theatrical bow and whispered apologies, all while reaching out to the camera in mock sincerity.
To give some context to his actions, Namewee celebrated a legal triumph when the court ruled in his favor in a case against Star Planet for breaching their contract regarding his past cancelled event not too long ago. Expressing gratitude to the judiciary for delivering long-awaited justice, Namewee thanked them for confirming Star Planet and Datuk Alan’s breach of contract after four years of anticipation.
Despite being found guilty of defaming Foo, Namewee vowed to abide by the court’s directives, including paying damages, issuing an apology video, and publishing apologies in print media. Determined to expose their conduct, he affirmed his commitment to fulfilling these obligations, emphasizing the importance of revealing their actions.
