Supposedly I should become an engineer as I was graduated from Mechanical Engineering. But hey, who said we must get a job as what we studied during the university? So lastly, I decided to pursue what I have longed for years, to be a full-time miniature artist. I am a self-taught artist and I learn to make miniatures myself since 2009.
You have the cutest pseudonym ever! Why the name PicoWorm?
Pico – is a tremendously small unit in metric system; – Worm is inspired from the word ‘bookworm’. The meaning behind PicoWorm is signifying somebody who loves to devote time in making something small – where the person is me! It also lies a hidden initial just same as my name, P.W.
What do you do full time?
I do miniature designs for a living.
Any upcoming projects for you?
I am going to do a kitchen scenario for my own collection. I am going to put all the kitchenware I made such as rooster bowls, vintage tiffin carriers and etc. Putting the minis altogether is real FUN!
Where can we find you on the internet?
I’m only active on two social media: Facebook and Instagram. Too many social media accounts is a distraction especially for people like me working at home!
How did you first discover miniature art?
I’ve never stop loving this spiritual art since I fell in love with it back in 2007. It was the day my sister brought me a dollhouse book from Taiwan, and I first got to know about dollhouse and miniatures art. Since that day, my daily routine was all about researching miniatures on the internet. I started to save up money I earned from my part-time job, and started to purchase the tools and materials at 2009, and tried to make a small dollhouse on my own. My first completed kit was happened in 2010, when I joined a local dollhouse competition. I enjoy the progress so much to complete for a project, and this is how I started to make more and more minis in the future.
Are your handmade miniature designs up for sale?
Yes, most of the items are for sale, only some are for my own collection. But for customer requests, I do take customized orders too.
Any tips for beginners to learn more about clay art?
Internet is a powerful tool to get you approach for any form of art. But most importantly, practice more. With trial and error, then you will find yourself improve every time you make something!
What is a typical day in your life?
Every morning, I either go for a jog in the park or work-out at home, then I’ll cook myself a breakfast (as well as my lunch to save up the time). I found myself very unproductive if I work like office hour 8 to 5, so usually I will start working at 11am, until 7pm. If I need to rush orders, I will start working again at 9pm, after having dinner and when I’m done with housework. Before I go to sleep, I love listening to music or radio, and get myself a book for bedtime reading.
What are you passionate about?
I would say, making miniatures is my life. I can’t live without it because I love it immensely since the first day I approach to it. Until now, I still keep learning on new things. I also love to travel. I like to explore new places and these always inspire me in my artwork too.
Do you have any idols?
Sure! There are many fantastic miniature artists all around the world, which I really admire a lot of them. The top idol in my heart is definitely Tomo Tanaka from Japan, who is more famously known as ‘Nunu’s House’. I have been following him since 2008. His masterpiece always amaze me and drive me to work harder, just like him.
Any life mottos?
NEVER GIVE UP. You will never know how it is going if you don’t even start trying.
Let’s get personal! Who is your all time inspiration in life?
My mum and family. They always give me encouragements in all aspects. My mum is always the first person who can see my new born artwork babies, and she always give me suggestions through sharing her stories with me, and give me ideas on how should I work on vintage and traditional stuffs.
What is the ideal weekend for you?
I dislike crowded shopping malls so I usually stay at home for reading, or try to experiment on new techniques to make miniatures. I also love to make new miniature or come out with some good ideas for the next projects.
Tell us what makes you smile the most?
The time I spent with my love ones (family, boyfriend and friends). I also like watching comedy movies, especially old Hong Kong movies like Steven Chow’s. I can watch them over and over again without getting bored!
Where do you see yourself in 2 years’ time?
I want myself to be better in terms on skills, and get to know more friends with similar hobby. I also wanted to have more of my own collections so I can exhibit them, even if it is just a small exhibition.
