Could you imagine a life full of controls and involuntary hospitalization? Where you don’t have the freedom to control where you go and what you do.
Could you accept it or not, this is the life of popular US singer — Britney Spears has been living in for the past 13 years. The reason behind this was because she was under a conservatorship that was helmed by her father since her public mental breakdown in 2008. What’s even worse is that she has also been requested to remain under this conservatorship when she’s already now 38 years old. Like, what?

According to AP News, her father and other conservators have also been restricting her to get married to her boyfriend and having a baby by forcing her to take birth control and other medications that are totally against her will. She has been saying that the conservatorship is abusive and she wants her life back. Her fans have then initiated the #FreeBritney movement through social media in order to bring awareness to society.

Conservatorship is an act to give control to a conservator to make decisions on behalf of the conservatee, from financial, health, business to personal life decisions due to the incompetence of the conservatee to take care of it. This explains why Britney was not allowed to leave her house, spend her money or even drive a car together with her boyfriend. She’s now attempting to immediately suspend her father as her conservator and replace it with someone else instead.
