2019 surely has been the year of box offices. From Avengers: Endgame becoming the highest-grossing films all-time to Lion King and Aladdin defying box office expectations, 2019 surely has no short of good films being released to the silver screen.
With 2019 ending, there are still upcoming, anticipated movies that will be released from September to December. Watch out for these 7 movies coming your way!
1. IT Chapter 2
The sequel to IT (2017) follows the losers club 27 years after they left Derry. Now having gone their own ways, they decided to return to Derry after being called by Mike, who remain there when children start to go missing again. Haunted and scarred by their experience with Pennywise, they must conquer all of their fears to defeat Pennywise forever.
If anything stands out in this film is the casting of the adults, who bear resemblance to their younger casts of 2017’s IT. It’s not easy to find someone who bears resemblance to their elder counterparts, let alone can act well! James McAvoy, Jessica Chastain, Jay Ryan, Bill Hader, Isaiah Mustafa, and James Ransone stars as the adult versions of their younger counterparts of 2017’s IT.
IT Chapter 2 is set to be released on 6 September 2019.
2. Ad Astra
Finally, a film set in space! When was the last time we watched something like this?
The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival has been received positively by critics. It has earned an 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, with The Guardian giving 5 stars, calling Brad Pitt’s performance as Astronaut Ray McBride as “so understated that it hardly looks like acting at all”
Set in the near future, Astronaut Roy McBride searches for his father who, was also an astronaut goes mission during a space exploration missing. In a mission to find his father, he goes on a mission across the solar system to uncover the truth about his missing father.
From glistening cinematography to celestial framing, it looks as if the film was actually filmed in space.
3. Joker
This highly anticipated Joker film will hit cinemas this October 4. Directed by Todd Phillips and starring Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker/Arthur Fleck, this film follows a failed comedian who slowly descends into madness while being ignored and ridiculed by society.
What makes the Joker standout from the rest of comic book films is that it is not based on any Joker comic books. Instead, it is character-driven with the story being originally written. Hence, we’ll be getting something original this time!
The film has premiered at the Venice Film Festival and was very well received by critics, who gave an 8-minute standing ovation as the credits rolled. IGN gave it a rare 10/10 rating while IMDB gave it a 9.7/10 from 6,541 users as of the time of this writing.
4. Gemini Man
What happens when you find someone is trying to kill you, when to your horror, you discover that the person is trying to kill you is, in fact, you, your younger self. That can predict your every move, your thoughts and actions.
Will Smith vs Will Smith in Gemini Man plays Henry Brogan. Who cloned Henry Junior? Henry Senior must uncover the truth behind his younger self’s cloning, all while everyone is out to stop him.
5. Midway
It seems that the trend of war films will never die. Midway does it like that.
Set in 1942 during the Battle of Midway, the soldiers and their commanders set the course of actions that will change the path of history. Explosions, warplanes, soldiers, gunfire: checked.
6. Knives Out
At a family gathering, the patriarch of his dysfunctional family, Harian Thrombey is found dead mysteriously in a room. Who killed him? A detective comes in and immediately declares everyone a suspect. No ONE is going out until he gets to the bottom of this. Everyone will be questioned. Everyone is a suspect.
If anything about the film is a murder-mystery-esque, it’s more into a neo-noir black comedy. With the quirky, weird family will lead the film with twists, red herrings, and lies that the family has dearly hold on. What secrets could the family be hiding?
And not to mention the star-studded cast. Chris Evans, Toni Collette, Michael Shannon, Daniel Craig, and Jamie Lee Curtis. Chris Evans’ character plays a character who is foul-mouthed, which is very far from his squeaky-clean image in Avengers. We can’t to see him playing a dark, meaner character!
7. Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker
The Saga comes to an end with Episode 9. All Star Wars movie ends here (unless Disney decides to greenlit more trilogies).
Years after the events from the Last Jedi, the surviving resistance face the First Order. With everything they had, power knowledge of their ancestors, they are set for the final battle. It is the culmination of all-Star Wars films like it is the Endgame. All generation ends here.
Fan theories have been floating around of possible shocking reveals, twists, and deception. We’ll have to wait until 20 December to find out!
8. Little Women
Little Women is a novel adaptation of the same name by Louisa May Alcott. Fresh out of the civil war, four sisters come of age in its aftermath. Focusing on their adult lives, this the trailer gives a heart-warming, dramatic and comedic themes to it as they navigate through their lives.
Directed by Greta Gerwig (Jackie, Lady Bird, 20th Century Women) and led by a strong cast, starring Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Meryl Streep, and Timothee Chalamet, it is probably something that is hard to ignore. The trailer hints something positive, dramatic out of this film.
