Hi there! I’m James Wong, a full time insurance agent with Allianz Malaysia, with 7 years of experience. Specializing with helping Malaysian setting emergency, retirement and legacy fund. I have also worked as a life settlement broker for a period of time.
Tell us more about your personal experience as an insurance agent. What inspired you to be one?
Life insurance is not a glamorous career as compared to a lawyer, doctor or engineer. I bet no one would say “I want to become a life insurance agent” when asked about their ambition in school. My first year in the business has been a tough one. With no contacts, network, daily rejections. Earning trust from strangers is the hard part, and I suffer through it.
What pushed me to persevere during these 7 years of my business career ?
My Mom, in 2012, she admitted to the hospital due to stroke, and because of her past history with early stage of breast cancer, she couldn’t get cover by medical insurance. I can’t really think of doing anything else right now other than fully focus in my insurance business. I recently took a will and trust license just because I wanted to add value for my clients need. I have all my clients trusted me with their financial and estate planning, my goal is to make sure they achieve their financial success.
Any advice for people who do not possess medical insurance?
Medical insurance is not a good investment, same goes to properties, shares and unit trust is not a good insurance either. So if you are happy to pay off your medical bill with your investments, (touch wood) basically you don’t need insurance at all.
But, let me ask you these 3 questions:
If “yesterday” you were to diagnoses with a critical illnesses and required RM200,000 for the surgery, and you do not have a medical insurance.
a) Who would you look for help to pay for the high medical cost ?
b) You probably going to rest for at least 6 months for a full recovery, without income, who is willing to help you pay your car loan, your home loans, and your other daily expenses ?
(unless you bought your car from “buy here, pay here” dealership and covered its cost)
c) Would you be interested, if I were to introduce you to that person before any of this happen ?

With my job, I meet new people and I love making new friends! Definitely a coffee session too.

Where do you see yourself in 2 years?
I seeing myself to have my own dream team that is passionate to help more Malaysian getting right life insurance quotes. I’m serious, really, I believe financial products should never be sold, they should be professionally prescribed. It’s about making better financial decisions, not about buying more products.
