Today is the day of candle light dinner, surprises, proposal, heart shape balloons, presents and etc. This is a romantic day which every girl dreamed of especially those who have boyfriend or husband.
It’s basically an annual celebration done by couples. Despite of its greatness, how many of us know the real history of Valentine’s Day? Where does it comes from? Why do we celebrate it?
I guess some of you started thinking about it, right?
Here’s the answer:
The origin of Valentine’s Day has to begin in ancient Rome. From 13th to 15th February, the Roman celebrated the ancient festival, Lupercadia. Till the Roman Empire became less heretic and more Christian, Lupercadia was transformed into St.Valentine celebration.
A historian of University of Colorado, Noel Lenski once said that the Roman romantics were drunk and naked. The festival was well-known because of its debauchery and nudity. The Roman men sacrificed a goat and a dog for the hides of the animals. They were then used it to whip the woman. The young women will also line up for the mean to hit them as they believed this could make them fertile.
Another thing that they would do is a matchmaking draw lots. The young men will draw the names of women from a jar and they will be couple during the festival. Later on, in the fifth century, Pope Gelasius I combined Lupercadia and St.Valentine, make it a Christian holiday. However, it didn’t stop the debauchery and nudity of this festival.
As the years passed, Chaucer and Shakespeare romanticized this festival and the holiday became sweeter. There was industrial revolution in the 19th century, where the factory-made cards produced. In 1913, Hallmark Cards of Kansas City, MO., had been widely producing valentines. Since then, February has changed.
Today, Valentine’s Day has become a widely-celebrated festival around the world including Malaysia. Businesses such as florist and restaurants are achieving their annual biggest sales. A man would never have missed out this festival to bring their partner to a fine-dining or get them a bouquet of flowers.
