Just when you thought you’re good for the rest of the year, Netflix isn’t quite done with 2017 yet. Within these 3 months, there’s going to be a bunch of new series coming right up. So, try to get all of these series down within 12 weeks before hello 2018!
1. Suburra
We’re seeing a whole lot of European countries making their own Netflix Original, and now it’s the Italian’s turn. It’s a political drama that will explore the link between organised crime and politics in Rome. Sounds like an Italian Narcos, doesn’t it?
2. Mindhunter
I’m sure you’ve heard this was coming, especially how often I’ve personally seen it on my Facebook Timeline. This unnerving series follows 2 FBI agents who not only tries to prevent crimes by psychopaths but also attempt to understand the crimes committed. The show also has a stellar cast which includes big names like Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallanay, Anna Torv and Hannah Gross. It does look like this series takes inspiration from Criminal Minds, but it also looks like it’s going to be darker version.
3. Alias Grace
This series follows the story of Grace Marks, a poor, young Irish immigrant and domestic servant in Upper Canado who, along with stable hand James McDermott, was convicted of the brutal murders of their employer, Thomas Kennear, and his housekeeper, Nancy Montgomery. The story was set in 1843 with an amazing cast such as Sarah Gadon, Edward Holcroft and Zachary Levi.
4. Godless
Created by the talented Steven Soderbergh, poster boy of the Sundance generation, is this Netflix series that follows criminal Drank Griffin, played by Jeff Daniels, and his gang of outlaws who are on a mission of revenge again Roy Goode, played by Jak O’Connel, a son-like protégé who betrayed the brotherhood.
5. Marvel’s The Punisher
Anyone who has watched Marvel’s Daredevil on Netflix knows that the most interesting thing in season 2 was The Punisher. Most of us were severely disappointed by Iron Fist, and more so with Defenders. But with Frank Castle’s introduction in Daredevil Season 2, and Jon Bernthal (Yes, Shane from The Walking Dead) taking the lead, it’s hard to see how they could go wrong with this series.
The series will show us how this anti-hero taking revenge on those responsible for the death of his wife and children, and uncovering a conspiracy that runs far deeper than New York’s criminal underworld (like with all Marvel Netflix Series). Let’s just hope Marvel doesn’t let us down… again.
6. Dark
Dark is a family saga with a supernatural twist and set in a German town in present day. It follows the disappearance of 2 young children which exposes the double lives and fractured relationships amongst 4 families. This series will have 10 episodes, each is an hour long and showcases supernatural twists that ties back to the same town in 1986. Sounds like someone took inspiration from Stranger Things.
7. Big Mouth
With shows like Rick & Morty, BoJack Horseman and more being well-loved, it is no surprise that we’ll see more shows like that. This 10-episode edgy adult animated comedy from real-life best friends Nick Kroll (Kroll Show, The League) and Andrew Goldberg (Family Guy) will be about the glorious nightmare of teenage puberty. Whuttt?
8. Kiss Me First
This series tells the story of Leila, a lonely 17-year-old who is obsessed with a fictional online gaming site called Agora. Whilst place, she meets Tess, a cool and confident party girl who harbours a dark secret. In real life, the two girls become good friends but after Tess disappears, Leila decides to assume her identity and is quickly sucked into the mystery behind Tess’ disappearance.
9.She’s Gotta Have It
This 10-episode series is a contemporary update of Spike Lee’s debut independent film and centres on Nola Darling, a Brooklyn-based artist in her late twenties, struggling to define herself.
10. The End of the F****** World
This series is based on the award-winning series of comic books by Charles Forsman and invites its audience to the dark and confusing lives of teen outsiders James, plated by Aled Lawther (Black Mirror, The Imitation Game), and Alyssa, played by Jessica Barden (The Lobster, Ellen, Penny Dreadful), as they embark on a road trip to find Alyssa’s father who left when she was a child.
11. Watership Down
This series is a remake of the tragic animated movie, Watership Down for a whole new generation in 2017. Here’s the old movie trailer if you want to transport yourself to your childhood days.
12. “Wormwood” (Miniseries)
Directed by the ground-breaking filmmaker Errol Morris, Wormwood is a 6-part series that explores the limits of knowledge; the lengths we’ll go in our search for the truth. This is the story of one man’s sixty-year quest to identify the circumstances of his father’s mysterious death.
