Located at the Semporna tourist jetty, it is Malaysia’s first floating fire station that just began its operations 6 days ago.
Sabah Fire and Rescue Department director Kamarulzaman Malik Abdullah mentioned that the facility would help speed up the response time in the event of a fire or other emergencies.
This is especially significant as there is a high risk of fire at the water villages in Sabah.
The floating fire and rescue station was built at a cost of RM 200,000 and is equipped with 3 boats.
The 3 boats will be used for different tasks, such as for firefighting, search and rescue operations, and for Emergency Medical Rescue Service (EMRS).
The fire station will be operated by a chief, 3 supervisors, and 20 local volunteer firefighters who had been trained for 5 months.
The director of the floating fire station also added that it would act as a benchmark for other states.
The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department is trying to increase the number of such floating stations, especially in high-risk areas across Sabah in order to help other areas in Malaysia as well.
