In case you’re still down with GoT fever, September is legitly THE month where public holidays are raining abundantly at the Malaysian’s shores. In other words, it’s time to ditch your couch, get your tan fixed, and ketchup with your loved ones. Over food, duh!
Food is one of the most (if not the most) effective social lubricants. I mean, how is it possible for you not to rekindle with your long lost friends over food because a single “hmmm…” is all it takes to bring the walls down and keep the conversations going. And it’s so darn satisfying to gulp down that basket of truffle fries without the care of the world!
Where to?
We’re glad you asked. Read on to find out!
1. Yut Kee Restaurant
Address: 1, Jalan Kamunting, Chow Kit, 50300 Kuala Lumpur.
Yut Kee Restaurant is undoubtedly one of the most popular spots for a hearty spread of traditional Hainanese breakfast. Established way back in the 1920s, it is one of the oldest kopitiam in the bustling city of Kuala Lumpur. It was formerly located along Jalan Dang Wangi before it was relocated to a shophouse along Jalan Kamunting, with the help of companies that are equipped with moving supplies.
The interior is mindfully put together specifically to resemble a traditional Chinese coffee shop. Think classic floor tiles, marble tables, and wooden chairs. Food wise, they are famed for their Hainanese Pork Chop- perfectly crisp pork rolls drenched with brown sauce, served with mixed vegetables and potato wedges, with apple sauce served separately. A perfect epitome of sin served warm on a plate! Yut Kee is also known for their Roti Babi, which is a bread stuffed with perfectly-seasoned pork and onions. If you’re not a fan of pork, do give their other items from the menu a try too! Trust us, it’s worth the shot.
P/S: Do expect a longer wait especially during the holidays. Our advice? Don’t show up without having a light snack beforehand! We don’t want to be a hangry customer, do we?
2. Merchant’s Lane
Address: 1st Floor, 150, Jalan Petaling, City Centre, 50000 Kuala Lumpur.
For starters, this can be a little tricky. Find the doors in turquoise (as shown in picture) and it’ll lead you up to where you should be (you’re welcome!). Once you’ve ascended the stairs, bask into the ambiance of a heavily influenced Malaysian Chinese-Peranakan atmosphere which gives off the rustic, old school vibes. In other words, it’s very #Instaworthy!
Interior décor talks aside, Merchant’s Lane serves a wide range of East-meets-West fusion food, just to name a few, Hongkie Beef Stew (layman terms: slow-cooked Cantonese-style beef), and Italian Chow Mein (layman terms: spaghetti aglio olio topped with chicken rendang).
Fun facts: Merchant’s Lane was once a brothel in the 1980s. PS150 is located along this row of shophouse too!
3. Limapulo: Baba Can Cook
Address: 50, Jalan Doraisamy, Chow Kit, 50300 Kuala Lumpur.
For those who are always on the lookout for authentic Nyonya food in Kuala Lumpur, Limapulo is the place for you. Its signature dish, Nyonya Laksa, was voted as the best Curry Laksa in Klang Valley by The Star People’s Food Awards. Laden with fresh herbs, spices and everything nice to bring out the aromatic flavours which many have come to love, this drool-inducing bowl of goodness is an instant gastronomy mood-lifter! Decorated with vintage props and furnished in a retro style, Limapulo exudes a nostalgic charm, which brings its patrons back to the 60s.
4. Chocha Foodstore
Address: 156, Jalan Petaling, City Centre, 50000 Kuala Lumpur.
Located at a stone’s throw away from Merchant’s Lane, Chocha Foodstore operates within an old shophouse along Petaling Street. Scraped walls, wooden furniture, old-fashioned tiles, high ceilings, and antiquated window grills – the café owners kept to its original state with quaint embellishments to preserve the authenticity of an old shophouse.
With the aim to create modern, comfort food with Asian flavours, Chocha Foodstore serves local delights with a twist. Do check out their famous Chincalok Fried Chicken, Duck Confit Rice, Chinese Pesto Flat Noodles, and also their excellent brewed tea!
