Most important question as a Malaysian
Malaysia is known for its epic food. And when you talk about food, Bangsar is one of those places where there’s so many types of amazing food, parking is ridiculous. So, like the rojak, I’ve mixed a bunch of amazing restaurants in Bangsar, from cheap to expensive, covering different types of cuisines; Indian, Chinese, Malay, and Western. Grab a tissue box because you’re going to have a drool-fest going through this list.
1. Nirwana Banana Leaf
Whenever someone talks about having banana leaf rice, one will always consider Nirwana at Bangsar which is famous for their delicious and somewhat affordable BLR. One thing I love about the BLR at Nirwana is that their portion is fairly large and to make things better, they’ve got a wide array of main dishes such as curry chicken, fried chicken, curry lamb and more. I have to warn you guys not to go there during lunch time though because it’s always crowded during those hours.

2. Fierce Curry House
I had to consider between putting this restaurant or Devi’s Corner, but I must say that I’m biased for Fierce Curry House because I have a special love for their food. You know the Fiercer Curry House in Publika? This is its mother. The interior is simple and unpretentious, giving its food the limelight it truly deserves and their BLR only costs RM6 which includes 4 vegetable sides and all the trimmings. You can also enhance your meal with their chicken tikka masala, mutton varuval, tandoori tiger prawns and more. But my favourite meal there has to be their Hyderabad dum Biryani, which features a pot of perfectly-seasoned Basmati rice with spices and meat spread on to create an incredibly beautiful and satisfying dish.
However, if you’re a horrible Asian and rice isn’t your thing, you can also opt for their epic roti Nutella! You can also wash your meal down with the a-typical mango lassi, or order the old skool Bru coffee which hails all the way from India.

3. Chelo Appam
Lucky Garden never disappoints, especially when it comes to this appam stall. If you ever love appam, you know how important it is to have crispy sides and fluffy centres, rich with the addition of coconut milk and sugar. My advice? Try out the brown sugar appam because that pairs best with a hot cup of teh tarik. They also make epic-tasting snacks such as vadai, curry puff and poppiah, and they’re all vegan. So, you don’t have to feel bad about your health and stuff your face comfortably! If you’re still hungry, hit up their thosai masala or thosai bawang which is generously filled with spiced potatoes and delicious chutney and dhal.

4. Restoran Rebung Dato Chef Ismail
This place was co-founded by celebrity chef Ismail Ahmad and Malaysia’s first astronaut Dr. Sheikh Muszaphar.
Rebung is a popular Malay restaurant that offers daily buffets for lunch, high-tea, and even dinner. You just have to pay one price and enjoy the myriad of Malay delicacies such as their Rendang Daging, Asam Pedas Ikan Pari, Patin Masak Tempoyak and more.

5. Sup Kambing Gerai Maidin
Most Bangsar-dwellers love coming here to get their sup kambing fix, even though their prices have increased since they first opened 10 years ago. This gerai has amazingly tender chunks of mutton, meat-that-glide-off-the-bone ribs and an extremely rich broth which is perfect of a rainy day and it’s also worth sweating for during a hot day.

6. The Ming Room
This Cantonese fine-dining restaurant, located in Bangsar Shopping Centre, serves authentic Cantonese cuisine, is non-halal and features classes dishes with contemporary twists. The restaurant opened in 2003, just 15 minutes away from the city centre and comes highly recommended by many and has repeatedly garnered positive reviews. For a more private dining experience, one can also have their dinner in one of their 6 exclusive banquet rooms that can accommodate up to 300 people. Loyal lunchtime customers will always return for their epic Hong Kong dim sum selections that are extensive and served with speedy efficiency and amazing homemade sauces.
They also have impressive a la carte options such as their baked foie gras stuffed with sea clams, crispy prawns with soft shell crab in honeydew, steamed freshwater prawns with radish cake, river carp medallion in stock and many more. And of course for desserts, you can finish your meal off with their amazing durian pudding!

7. Sun Huat Kee
Looking for a simple place to go to during the weekends to get your curry noodles or mixed rice fix? Head on to Sun Huat Kee. This place is not as hot as many other Chinese Coffee Shops as the place is semi air-conditioned and the layout is systematic and convenient, allowing you to breathe a little better. My recommendations are their amazing mee jawa, teo chew fish noodles, pork ball noodles and curry laksa (if you’re like me and don’t have a very high spice tolerance). The price is slightly higher here – expect to pay about RM1-RM1.50 more – but to me, it’s worth not sweating buckets at a crowded stall.

8. Restoran Chef Low 羊城海鲜饭店
Established somewhere in the 1980’s, this restaurant is right on the edge of Bangsar, locaed right behind the TMC Supermarket, sandwiched between some car workshops. Though the venue looks small, don’t be fooled as there’s a large space upstairs that can seat big families comfortably, and because Bangsar-dwellers seem to like eating late, the last order is at 11pm. You will also never get bored of their menu as they have over 200 types of dishes along with a wide array of amazing soups. Their Crispy Roast Chicken is also really crispy, isn’t oily and its portion could feed more than 4 people.
You can get the more adventurous – and probably really unhealthy – Chinese Style Fried Bacon which is bacon stir-fried with marmite, chilli and lime. Though the portion is not very big, it helps everyone whet their appetite. One can also try their Smoked Duck dish which is more a cold appetizer than a main meal and serves about one slice per person at a table of 10. To get some iron in you, I highly recommend their Combination Kai Lan with Dried Scallops where the leaves and stalks are separated and cooked differently. When it comes to seafood, you should try the classic Butter Mantis Prawn, Crispy Squid with Chilli Spices and Herbs, and of course, crab! In this case, their Stir-friend Crab with Salted Egg Yolk or their Special Stir-fried Crabs with Chilli Sauce that comes with Deep Friend Mantou to wipe up all that crab gravy!

9. Three Little Pigs & Big Bad Wolf
Opened in 2012, Three Little Pigs & Big Bad Wolf became popular for those who are looking for Western food specialising in pork. Their “Three Little Pigs” menu is featured from morning till 6pm and their “Big Bad Wolf” menu from 6pm onwards. If you’re a spaghetti lover, you need to try out their Wolf’s favourite pasta which is creamy carbonara spaghetti and a generous amount of crispy bacon, topped with a poached egg all mixed together. If you’re craving something heavier, give their BBQ ribs a shot!

10. Thirdwave Café
This is no ordinary café that serves typical pastas or set meals. This café is all about gourmet cuisines at an affordable price. Their dishes are usually vibrant so that you’ll take gorgeous Instgram pictures and help spread their vibrancy to all your followers. They also serve a wide range of delicious meals such as their bestseller; chicken and waffles. This dish of sous vide fried chicken leg is served with savoury cheddar waffle, drizzled with maple peanut butter and finished with some delicious cherry tomato salsa. Their dessert, the Hey Romeo, is also a must-try!
